The MSPRC and COBC Get a New Name…and New Web Address

Effective February 1st, the Medicare Secondary Payer Recovery Contractor (MSPRC) and the Coordination of Benefits Contractor (COBC) combined into one new entity named the Benefit Coordination and Recovery Center (BCRC).   The BCRC will assume all operational activities of the COBC and will perform recovery case work for Non-Group Health Plans (NGHP) which includes Liability insurance (including Self Insurance), No Fault insurance and Workers’ Compensation laws (or plans).

The telephone numbers and mailing addresses for the recovery contractor remain unchanged, however, the MSPRC website will be retired on April 1, 2014.   The information housed on this site has already been transferred to a new site:  http://go.cms.gov/cobro and CMS indicates that effective now the prior website will no longer be kept up to date.

So what does this mean for you?  According to CMS’s announcements these changes mean:

  • Improved customer service for stakeholders
  • Consolidated and streamlined data collection and recovery operations
  • Value-added efficiencies and enhanced resource utilization

Sounds great to us if that means improved turnaround times, timely responses, and accurate conditional payment letter information.  Time will tell – in the meantime, be sure to add BCRC to your list of new acronyms.
