Starting April 25, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will begin using the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) “Table 1: Life Table for the total population: United States, 2017” for Workers’ Compensation Medicare Set Aside (WCMSA) life expectancy calculations.  This means that for any WCMSA proposal received by CMS through the voluntary review program, or where any WCMSA case is reopened on or after April 25, the Workers’ Compensation Review Contractor will apply the CDC’s 2017 Table 1 for life expectancy calculations.  However, as with similar updates, the increases noted on the life table are minor, and the rounding procedure utilized by CMS should result in the use of the same life expectancy in many instances, and should not result in any surprising CMS issued approvals.
